Max Verstappen drove an exemplary race to repeat his 2017 victory at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. But while it was a fifth race win for Verstappen, it was a fifth title win for Lewis Hamilton, the British driver’s fourth place enough to see him crowned champion with two races to go of the 2018 F1 season, becoming only the third ever driver, behind Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher, to claim five Formula One world championships.
With all the focus on the potential crowning of Lewis Hamilton as 2018 World champion, you could have been forgiven for forgetting that there was a race going on and that Max Verstappen took a second win in as many years on Mexican soil.
The champagne and the big trophy in Mexico City went to Max Verstappen.
The Red Bull Dutchman drove faultlessly after taking the lead on the drag down to turn one from teammate polsiter Daniel Ricciardo, never coming under any meaningful pressure from behind as he cruised to the win, and The Dutch national anthem blares out as he stands between the two Ferrari drivers.
“Yeah, it’s amazing,” said Verstappen. “The start was the key. To be honest with you, I didn’t sleep very well last night so I was really determined to win today and luckily we did that. An amazing job by the team as well. We had the right tires available and the car was working really well.
