Maverick Vinales wins the 2018 Australian MotoGP Grand Prix

Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) ends Yamaha’s record 25-race victory drought after storming to a emphatic win at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2018 at Phillip Island, the Spaniard imperious in the second half of the race to eventually take his first win since Le Mans 2017 by 1.5 seconds over second place Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso.

The Spaniard ran home a clear winner after jumping clear in the early laps, aided by a shocking incident that took out both the fresh world champion Marc Marquez and Johann Zarco.

Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso rounded out the podium, while Australia’s Polesitter Jack Miller came home seventh, celebrating in parc ferme as the first independent team rider home.

The 23-year-old Spaniard Maverick Viñales clocked 40 minutes, 51.081 seconds, ahead of Italy's Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso, respectively.

"I needed that win, we needed that win, Yamaha needed it," Viñales said after his victory.

Marc Marquez crashed out of the Australian race.
Marquez, who secured his fifth career MotoGP title after he triumphed at the Japanese Grand Prix last week, crashed out of the race at Phillip Island following his collision with Frenchman Johann Zarco at 280 km/h.
