Cristiano Ronaldo has won the 2017 Ballon d'Or for the fifth time



Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or  for the fifth time - and the second year in a row.



The Real Madrid star took home the prize after guiding his team to a La Liga and Champions League double in 2016-17 the 32-year-old Portugal international level with 30-year-old Argentine Messi, who won the most recent of his five awards in 2015.
Messi's ex-Barcelona team-mate Neymar, now at Paris St-Germain, was third.

Last season, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win the Champions League and their first La Liga title since 2012.
Ronaldo scored 42 goals across all competitions during the 2016-17 season, leading Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double 
and helps qualify the Portugal national team for the Russia 2018 FIFA world Cup.


"This is something I look forward to every year," he said.
"Thanks to my Real Madrid team-mates. And I want to thank the rest of the people who helped me reach this level."

What is the Ballon d'Or?

Cristiano Ronaldo was voted as the winner of the award, which recognises Europe’s best player on behalf of France Football magazine, It has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, for the second year running by a group of 173 journalists from across the planet.
