Czech Republic wins the 2018 Fed Cup

The Czech Republic kept its perfect record in the Fed Cup finals by capturing the title for the sixth time in eight years by defeating defending champion United States an epic victory.

Katerina Siniakova saved two match points in almost four hours before defeating Sofia Kenin 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in the first reverse singles on Sunday to give the home team an insurmountable 3-0 lead in Prague, over defending champion United States in the best-of-five final. The remaining two matches were not played.

Siniakova and Barbora Strycova won Saturday's opening-day singles matches.

The two most successful countries in the tournament's history were meeting in the final for the first time in more three decades.

It was the first victory for the Czechs over the United States - since the country was created after the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993 - after four defeats in the Fed Cup.
The Czechoslovakia team that won five Fed Cup titles was 2-6 against the U.S.

Although both teams were without several of their top players.
Czech top-10 ranked players Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova were sidelined through injury and illness respectively, while Serena and Venus Williams, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens were all unavailable for the visitors team for the 2018 Fed Cup final.
