Atletico Madrid won the 2018 UEFA Super Cup

Two goals from Diego Costa helped Atletico Madrid on the way to Uefa Super Cup glory against city rivals Real Madrid in a exciting 4-2 victory in Tallinn.

Real Madrid began life without Cristiano Ronaldo with an extra-time defeat to bitter rivals Atlético Madrid in the 2018 Uefa Super Cup.

Quickfire goals from Saúl Ñíguez and Koke gave Atlético a 4-2 win in Real’s first competitive match since their club record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to join Juventus, and  the Frenchman Zinedine Zidane was replaced as head coach by former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui.

Costa ensured Atletico got off to the perfect start, with the Spain striker capitalising on poor defending from Ramos and Raphael Varane before beating Keylor Navas with a high drive from a tight angle after just 49 seconds, either side of Karim Benzema’s header and a penalty from Sergio Ramos, ensured the match finished level after 90 minutes to force extra time at the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia. Koke's smart finish and Saul's sensational 16-yard volley in extra time helped Europa League holders Atletico win their third Super Cup in as many appearances.

It was the fourth time in the past five years that the Super Cup was contested by two Spanish sides - but the first with both teams from the same city. With the La Liga season set to start at the weekend, playing 120 minutes in a venue located more than 2,400 miles from the Spanish capital.
